Mystery Phil Takes On Top Class

Fresh off his biggest performance since coming East, Mystery Phil will take on the top class on Saturday (July 4) at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.

The 10-dash Saturday card kicks off at 6:00 p.m. with the $2,700 featured pace lining up in Race 9. Mystery Phil has Post 3 in the field of six with Adam Merner back in the bike after winning in 1:55.1 last time out. Melissa Rennie trains the five-year-old son of Shanghai Phil for owners Dale and Ronnie Rennie of Elmsdale.

Jetster has found a spot in the triactor three times in four tries since the season resumed in June and will leave from Post 5 Saturday for trainer-driver Marc Campbell. The other top choice is Post 4 entrant Creepin with David Dowling above the wheels. The Brittany Watts trainee has been perfect in hitting the board so far in the summer meet but will look for his first victory since January on Saturday’s card.

Race analyst Les MacIsaac sides with the hot horse in the field, Mystery Phil, for the top spot.

“Mystery Phil steps up in class but he's the only one in the field to have posted wins in 1:55 in each of the past two years,” MacIsaac said. “While that doesn't mean everything it's enough for us to give him top billing.”

Winter Blast (Jason Hughes), Tempo Seelster (Ken Murphy) and Silverhill Buddy (Myles Heffernan Sr.) complete the field.

A trio of new arrivals to Island racing will compete in the sixth race. Arnoldthepaperboy makes his Island debut for new trainer-driver Vaughan Doyle of Charlottetown. The four-year-old son of Mach Three was racing the claiming ranks in Ontario for Island native Ron MacDonald.

Newcomer Bank Shot Hanover has Post 6 for new trainer Brendon Mullen after last racing the $7,000 claimer at Grand River Raceway in Ontario for Victor Puddy, while Power Of A Cruiser ships in from Truro, N.S., for owner Chuckie Symes of Springhill, N.S., to join the Marc Campbell stable. He leaves from Post 7 in his Island debut.

Driver Corey MacPherson will continue his quest for win number 1,000 of his driving career on the card. The Cornwall reinsman has eight hopefuls on the program.

This will be the final card of racing at the capital oval until Thursday, July 16, as action shifts to Red Shores Summerside for Governor's Plate Week racing.
