It has been reported that Leo Burns, the oldest driver to ever record a winning drive in a standardbred race, has passed away.
The Evansville Courier & Press has reported that Burns passed away Saturday, July 13 at the age of 98.
In 2012, at the age of 97 years young, Burns piloted the then-eight-year-old trotting mare Winsome Wyoming to a 2:07.1 victory in a Free For All Trot at the Wayne County Fair in Fairfield, Illinois. Winsome Wyoming, who had started from Post 1 in the event, went wire-to-wire through fractions of :32.1, 1:02.4 and 1:34.4. The duo opened up a three and three-quarter-length lead at the top of the lane and then hung on for a two-length triumph in 2:07.1.
The report states that funeral services for Burns are pending at Nale’s Funeral Home in Albion, Illinois.
