On Tuesday June 7, Maritime harness racing has lost another of its grand 'ole competitors with the passing of William 'Big Bill' Nicholson. He was in his 88th year

Nicholson is well known in the Maritime harness racing fraternity for campaigning Scotch Gamaun, who won the 1974 Gold Cup & Saucer on his native Prince Edward Island, thus fulfilling a lifelong dream for the horseman. Scotch Gamaun also captured such storied events as the Walter Dale Memorial & Alexander Memorial.
Nicholson was a veteran of World War II, as he served with the Prince Edward Island Highlanders. He was also the proprietor of Wilson’s Fish in the Saint John City Market, and later owner of Nicholson’s Corner Fish.
Nicholson is resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424). Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 8 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., and on Thursday, June 9, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
A funeral service will be held at Brenan’s Chapel on Friday, June 10 and will begin at 12 noon.
