The New York Sire Stakes (NYSS) County Fair Series has announced the cancellation of harness racing scheduled for Friday, July 3 at Goshen Historic Track due to forecasted dangerous heat conditions.
The decision follows the New York State Gaming Commission's Heat Management Protocol, developed by the Commission's Equine Medical Director, which serves as the standard followed by the New York Sire Stakes County Fair Series. The protocol recommends cance;ling racing when the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) heat index reaches dangerous levels that may pose a risk to horses and drivers.
Current NOAA forecasts indicate heat index values between 40°C and 43°C degrees are expected in the Goshen area through Friday evening, creating conditions that warrant the cancellation of Friday's program in the interest of equine and human safety.
"The health and welfare of our equine athletes, drivers, horsemen and horsewomen, and everyone involved in our racing program remains our highest priority," said Fletcher Whyland, Executive Director of the Agriculture & New York State Horse Breeding Development Fund. "While we are disappointed, following the Commission's established safety protocols is the responsible course of action under these forecasted conditions."
At this time, racing scheduled for Saturday, July 4 and Sunday, July 5 remains on the calendar. The New York Sire Stakes will continue to closely monitor weather forecasts and heat index values in consultation with Goshen Historic Track and will provide updates if additional schedule changes become necessary.
Updates will be posted on the New York Sire Stakes website and official social media channels as they become available.
