The 2016 Atlantic Sires Stakes race season will officially get underway this Sunday (June 5) at Truro Raceway, as Canada's oldest sires stakes program will celebrate its 50th Anniversary year.

A total of 30 Atlantic Sires Stakes three-year-old pacing fillies will gather for competition Sunday afternoon at the Truro oval. The fillies will meet in four $6,280 'A' divisions and in one $2,500 'B' division.

The Atlantic Sires Stakes program, the first of its kind in Canada, was formed back in 1966 with the sole purpose of promoting the Standardbred horse industry in Atlantic Canada. Today the program not only showcases the best young horses in the region, it also encourages people to breed, buy and race horses in the Maritimes.

The Atlantic Sires Stakes offers participants and spectators the finest in harness racing action and the season-ending Atlantic Breeders Crown Championship has become one of the most prestigious Maritime harness racing events.

Atlantic Sires Stakes events will take place at racetracks throughout Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island this year, with the Atlantic Breeders Crown being hosted by Red Shores at the Charlottetown Driving Park in October.

First race post time at Truro Raceway on Sunday is 12 p.m.
