George 'Fred' Lowthers Passes

Trot Insider has learned that breeder-owner George Frederick 'Fred' Lowthers of Newport Station, Nova Scotia passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Tuesday, June 1 in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII. He was in his 71st year

Lowthers had been involved in the standardbred racing industry for over four decades

He had horses that raced for prominent Maritime trainers such as Eric 'Ike' Moreside, Russell Burgoyne, Billy Turner and, in recent years, Henry Smallwood.

Lowthers loved the hospitality of the paddock at Truro Raceway and his annual trek to Old Home Week in Charlottetown for the stakes racing.

He was inducted into the Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame as a member of the 1961 Windsor Maple Leafs Senior Hockey Team. He was also an avid Toronto Maple Leafs fan.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, the former Joan Marie McNeil, and his children, Doug, Carol (Jack), Joanne (Doug) and Debbie (Peter).

Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation by request.

A funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 4 at Lindsay's Funeral Home Chapel, 194 King St., Windsor, with Rev. Tom Henderson officiating.

Family flowers only. Donations in memory of Lowthers may be made to St. Thomas Anglican Church or to the Hants County Branch of Victorian Order of Nurses.
