Claimed Horses Can Be Tested For Steroids

As of June 1 2009, the Canadian Pari-Mutuel Agency (CPMA) will begin testing for the following veterinary approved anabolic steroids

: boldenone, nandrolone, stanozolol and testosterone. The CPMA announced its intention to commence testing in a Memorandum to the Canadian racing industry issued in February 2009.

The Ontario Racing Commission (ORC) is giving owners/trainers the option to have claimed horses tested for steroids. As a user-pay system, the owner/trainer claiming the horse will be responsible for the testing fee.

The owner/trainer will be required to indicate at the time of claiming if the horse is to be sampled for steroid testing. The Judges/Stewards will then inform the TCO2 tech, who will conduct the sampling as soon as practical after the race.

The testing fee, payable by cheque only to Racing Forensics is $225. This is to cover lab fees, shipping costs and Racing Forensics administration fee. The results will be sent directly to the claiming owner/trainer, with a copy to ORC.
