Ed Sahely Passes

Published: April 29, 2021 11:14 am EDT

Longtime harness racing industry participant Ed Sahely of Waterdown, Ont. passed away on Tuesday, April 27, 2021 on his 86th birthday.

Ed was predeceased by his wife Vera and leaves behind his two sons, Eddie and Mitch.

Ed's lifelong passion was betting on horse racing.  He was a familiar face for years in the Flamboro Downs grandstand, and owned a number of notable performers over more than 50 years of involvement. Upickit gave son Mitch his first driving win, and in doing so Mitch became the first driver in Canada to notch his first driving win in a sub-2:00 mile. Another notable campaigner was Horizons Dancer, the former older pacing mare track record holder at Flamboro Downs who also gave Hall of Famer Trevor Ritchie his first sub-2:00 driving tally.

The family has indicated that Ed will be cremated and that there will be no public service.

My condolences to Mitch and family for the loss of Ed. He was funny, entertaining and an all round great guy.

I have been in the horse business for many years and have met many trainers. Despite the years and the people Ed has always remained one of my favorites. Loved his horses and from what I can tell loved his life. Ed was a big part of my early life. I will miss him.

Ed was most definitely a character, always with a good story. He loved the action. Condolences to the Sahely family.

Mitch: So sorry to hear of Ed's passing R.I.P. Always enjoyed meeting Ed and our talks.

Ed will be sorely missed. Was always a great guy to talk to. Don and I will always remember our conversations with Ed. Deepest sympathy to Mitch and the Sahely family.

Ed and I always argued about the benefits of ‘Ball Solution’ every time we met. Those conversations will be missed. My condolences to Mitch and family.

Ed was one of my first owners when I started out in the business. Never a day went by when we didn't have a laugh about something. Condolences to all the family. Pam and Gary

Here's hoping the slots pay off more and 20 cent supers get easier to pick. I will miss the phone calls.

Great memories with Ed starting in the 1970's at Western Fair Raceway and then on to Windsor Raceway and Flamboro. Ed loved horse racing, betting on horses and he loved the horses themselves. Our condolences to Mitch and family.
