Peter Gouvellis, who was affectionately known by racing fans in the Wilmington, Delaware area as 'Pete the Greek,' passed away peacefully at age 85 on April 20
.
A longtime resident of Chester, Pennsylvania, Pete served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and Korean War. Upon discharge, he returning home and was employed in Chester by the U.S. Postal Service.
Pete was a big fan of one of the prominent early entertainers of the rock and roll era, Bill Haley and the Comets and often followed them in appearances. A devoted New York Yankees fan, he thoroughly enjoyed all sports and was a regular, seldom missing a night, at ill-fated Brandywine Raceway harness track. When Brandywine closed after the 1989 season, Pete transferred his loyalty to thoroughbred racing at Delaware Park.
In addition to racing, Pete also had a special love for children. During his final years, he was lovingly cared for by a trio of friends, Barb, Denise and Pam, whom he referred to as his “angels”.
Gouvellis is survived by his brother, Nick of Orlando, FL.; and sister, Stella of Cherry Hill, NJ and many nephews and nieces, as well as his extended Delaware Park family and friends.
A celebration of Pete Gouvellis’ life is scheduled for Friday, April 27, 2012 from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Delaware Park in the New Castle Room.
