After a four-month illness, Monticello Raceway trainer-driver Richard Ingrassia passed away at his home in Hurleyville, New York on March 30
. At the time of death, he was also employed as an assistant trainer for Ray Schnittker, with whom he was associated for many years.
Ingrassia, the 45-year-old son of veteran horseman Ronald Ingrassia, was a member of the Monticello Harness Horsemen’s Association Board of Directors and was the nephew of Frank and Jacqueline Ingrassia – 'Jacquie' being one of the top female drivers in the sport.
According to his dad, 'Richie' was fine until about four months ago when something changed his body’s chemistry and he became ill. He was admitted to New York University Hospital in New York City, where he was ultimately diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforman, a virulent form of brain cancer.
Though he did not drive often, Richie still had won 38 races from a limited amount of lifetime starts. He also had 114 winners as a trainer. His best season as a conditioner was during 1998 when he harnessed 74 winners.
The local racing community is deeply saddened by Richie’s passing, as he was always cheerful and willing to lend a hand.
“Richie was intelligent, young with fresh ideas, always cheerful and never argumentative, but he stood his ground when he believed he was right,” said Monticello Harness Horsemen’s Association President Alan Schwartz. “He was wise beyond his years and our hearts go out to his family on their terrible loss.”
Ingrassia is survived by his wife, Kelly, his children Richard, Jr. (age seven) and Hanna (6), his dad, Ronald, mother, Carol, brothers Randy and Ricky, and sister Barbara, as well as several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
