Some of the 72 sophomore papers eligible to the 2021 Pepsi North America Cup will start that voyage in stakes action this Friday (March 12) at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
Of the 22 horses entered in three $17,000 first-round divisions of the Snowshoe Pacing Series, two Cup-eligible three-year-olds — Yankee Litigator and Major Makover — will look to begin their quests toward Canada's marquee pacing event on a winning note.
Yankee Litigator, who raced only twice as a two-year-old, broke maiden in his sophomore debut on March 1 at Mohawk. The Always B Miki gelding used a two-move effort to seize command on the backstretch en route to a 1:57.1 score at amid frigid conditions. In his most recent start, Yankee Litigator finished a game third to Big Chic Magnet — beaten three-quarters of a length. Louis-Philippe Roy drove Yankee Litigator in both of his 2021 starts for trainer Daniel Lagace and partners Christopher Nichol and Fred Brayford.
On Friday, Roy is listed to drive Yankee Litigator once again; they will start from post five in a field of eight drawn as the first Snowshoe division, which is carded as the first of 11 races on the program.
In the second division, programmed as race six, Major Makover will also seek his second career win after breaking maiden in 1:55.3 at Mohawk last Thursday (March 4). The son of Art Major campaigned on the New York Sire Stakes circuit as a rookie, making $51,208 and hitting the board four times in eight starts. While James MacDonald drove Major Makover to his maiden score, trainer Blake MacIntosh listed Doug McNair to handle Friday's driving assignment from post one in a seven-horse field for co-owners Hutt Racing Stable, Touchstone Farms and Ozzie MacKay.
The Snowshoe Pacing Series is for three- and four-year-old male pacers who had not won two races or $30,000 through and including Oct. 31, 2020.
