The harness racing community lost one its most beloved members on Sunday, February 26 with the sudden death of Lloyd H. Gilmour, 71.

Lovingly known as ‘Fuzzy’ by his many friends and family, his laugh and sense of humour will be something that they will all remember.

Born and raised in Ft. Erie, Ont., the son of William and Margaret Gilmour, he followed in the family business of harness racing with his father and brothers. He drove and trained many stakes winners and had 2,616 career driving wins.

He started his racing career in Toronto with longtime friend Frank Conlin. In 1968, Gilmour moved to Buffalo Raceway with Ray Remmen, Bev Kingston and Duke Dranichak. From there he moved to Vernon Downs and on to the Meadowlands Racetrack. In 1985 he moved to Rosecroft Raceway.

His driving career was cut short by a serious racing accident in 1989. After that he continued to train and own horses with partner John Wagner.

His two passions in life were horse racing and hockey. He proudly followed his oldest son Dale's racing success nightly at Pompano. He other passion was following his son Bret’s hockey journey from the time he put him on skates at two years old with the assistance of hockey great Dale Hunter. He always could be found at the end of the rink near Bret in the goalie's net from youth to junior to college hockey.

Gilmour is survived by his wife of 31 years, Jan; sons, Bret and Dale; granddaughter, MacKenzie; siblings, Phyllis Sider, Joanne Renshaw and Barbara Knapp; and multiple nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers, William ‘Buddy,’ George and John ‘Guy;’ and sisters, Helen Reinhardt and Norma Robinson.

The family will receive friends at Robert E. Evans Funeral Home, 16000 Annapolis Rd., Bowie, MD on Friday (March 3) at 3 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to DeMatha Catholic High School Hockey, 431f3 Madison St, Hyattsville, MD 20781 or Canisius College, 22011 Main St., Buffalo, NY 14208.

So sad to hear of Lloyd's passing. Lloyd has been a friend from the 60's. We raced together at Buffalo, Batavia and Mohawk. This business is so hard to get away and visit old friends. Fortunately for me just three weeks ago Lloyd was here at Pompano and Dale brought him over to see me. That's a visit I will never forget. We also raced together at Windsor Raceway for a few years. Lloyd was so full of humor and made us laugh for hours, He will be missed by so many.
My condolences to Jan, Bret, Dale, Jamie and Grandaughter MacKenzie who he adored.

Lloyd was just the greatest guy I will never forget him.

Until we meet again old buddy. Bev Kingston

Met Lloyd in1961 at the Beamsville Fair when we were just starting to drive, he won one heat and I won the other. We would run into one another many times over the years, a great guy to visit with. My condolences to the family. Rest easy old friend.

So sad to hear of Lloyd's passing. Knew him and Jan well in the 80's, just a great guy and so much fun to be around. And a great horseman, from a great family. Deepest condolences to his family and friends.
