Longtime trainer and owner Kim Matthews of Belwood, Ont. passed away, after a battle with cancer, on Wednesday, Feb. 11 at the age of 53.
Matthews was a longtime trainer, most notably and recently associated with trotters such as Gonnabe An Ottlaw and Nobananas. After retiring 'Ottlaw', Matthews converted the trotter to a riding horse. Matthews also worked with the Ontario Jockey Club as a guest racing analyst in the 1990s.
Survived by her husband Mike, sons Jesse and Dustin and extended family. Visitation will take place at the Graham Giddy Funeral Home, 280 St. David St S., Fergus, Ont., on Monday, February 16 from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. with the funeral at the Giddy Chapel on Tuesday, February 17 at 11:00 a.m.
Donations to the Sunrise Therapeutic Riding Centre, 6920 Con. 1, Puslinch, Ont. N0B 2J0, would be appreciated.

Shocking and sad news.. I knew her from when she worked for Budd Thorne. I hadn't seen her for quite awhile, but I do remember her as a friendly, nice person... RIP Kimmie [she let me call her that]

Kim was such a kind and caring person. I had the pleasure of working for Kim twice when I first came to Ontario and she treated me with respect, along with anyone she had dealt with. I am proud to say that this lady was a good friend. She worked hard and treated everyone fairly. My sincerest condolences to Mike, Jesse, Dustin, along her Mom and sisters. Rest in Peace, my friend.
