Longtime horseperson and driver Rickey R. Moffatt suddenly passed away on Thursday, Dec. 7. On Thursday, in his 77th year, while behind the wheel, Rick suffered a fatal heart attack, which was then followed by an inconceivable motor vehicle collision.
Father of Lee-Anne, Karrie and Troy Moffatt (Rebecca). Grandfather to Candice, Curtis, Kailey and Logan Moffatt.
Survived by his brother Jerry (Pauline) and sister Lynda (Kevin) and will be missed by niece Tammy and nephew Terry, as well as his many friends, extended AA family and the horse racing community.
Rickey grew up in London, Ont. and at the early age of 10 you could find him at Western Fair Raceway in the barn of Bill Herbert, learning the ropes and hiding from the school truant officer. In his early years, he had the opportunity to work for Cecil Coke, Ronnie Feagan and then landing in the stable of Neil McRann.
He obtained his driver’s license at age 16 and won his first race with Maudes Boy for Neil. Rick went on to become a successful horseman, winning many races and multiple driving titles.
He remained active in the horse racing industry his entire life and when he had completed his driving career, he continued to own, train and sell racehorses.
At the barn, he was always available to tell a story with a coffee in one hand and a cigarette in the other.
His wisdom and knowledge were always offered to fellow horseman if they were in need of “hanging up a horse.”
In his most recent years, he could be found in the early summer mornings on the backstretch at Woodbine, watching the Thoroughbreds train and those that knew and loved him referred to him as 'Daddyo.'
He may also be found putting in his daily 10,000 steps walking the racetrack, at his morning exercise classes, fishing at the pond or doing chores around the barn when needed.
His hobbies that evolved over the years included auctioneering, taking sailing lessons and participating in karate classes.
He was fully committed to his local AA chapters, attending weekly meetings, offering support to members or chairing sessions.
He was deeply loved by those that knew him and he will be greatly missed.
All arrangements entrusted to the Arn-Lockie Funeral Home, Norwich, 519-863-3020. Cremation has taken place. No service will be offered at this time.
A celebration of Rickey’s life will be held at a later date in 2024 with details to follow.
