Trot Insider has learned that longtime southern Ontario owner/trainer Murray Bolton has passed away at the age of 78.

Bolton, of Douro, Ont., passed away suddenly at his residence on Saturday (Nov. 3).

The passionate horseman and farmer was known to many for his great sense of humour, his love of the horses, and his pride in participating in the Standardbred racing industry.

Bolton – a resident of the Peterborough area that raced horses for roughly 30 years – started off in the cattle industry before focusing more on his racing stock. He campaigned numerous horses throughout his career. No Sugar Tonight was one of the horses that got him on his way, and Aaron Skipper was another that left a lasting impression on him.

Bolton’s face was a recognizable one across the southern Ontario racing circuit. He raced quite a bit of his stock at his local Kawartha Downs, but was also well known at Flamboro Downs early in his career.

Arrangements for Bolton are being taken care of by the Ashburnham Funeral Home & Reception Centre, which is located at 840 Armour Road in Peterborough, Ont. (K9H 2A2). The centre can be contacted by calling 705-740-0444.

Visitation will be taking place on Wednesday (Nov. 7) from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Thursday (Nov. 8) from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. A service will then follow at 12 noon. A trip to the cemetery will take place from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. and there will be a reception back at the funeral home at 2:30 p.m.

Donations to a charity of your choice can be made.

Please join Standardbred Canada in offering condolences to the family and friends of Murray Bolton.
