Trot Insider recently learned of the passing of former Free-For-All winner and stakes star Georgia Limited (5,1:54.1f [$1,152,674]).
"He died two weeks ago at Dr. Pierre Tardif’s farm in Victoriaville, Quebec,” said his former trainer, driver and developer, Dustin Jones. "He had been there since I moved to Ontario in 2011. He was a $12,000 yearling I purchased in 1994 in Lexington, and he made over $1 million. He represented Canada in the Elitlopp."
And Georgia Limited represented the nation very well in the 1998 edition of that iconic event. He finished fourth in his elimination heat for driver Michel Lachance, and the pair came back to finish a hard-charging second to the great mare, Moni Maker, in the final.
He won multiple Free-For-All and Invitational races in North America in his prime, and his biggest win came in the $170,000 American National at Balmoral Park shortly after he returned home from his European trip to compete in the Elitlopp.
He was the runner-up in the American National one year earlier, and he also celebrated top-three finishes in events like the Breeders Crown, the Nat Ray and the Classic Series.
The 43-time winner retired with earnings of $1,152,674 and a speed badge of 1:54.1 taken at Mohawk Racetrack in its days of being a five-eighths-mile oval in 1998.
