Stanley 'Stan' Martin Passes

Published: November 24, 2019 02:57 pm EST

Trot Insider has learned that longtime Standardbred racehorse owner/trainer Stanley 'Stan' Martin passed away surrounded by family at his residence on Sunday, November 24 from acute leukemia.

Stan and his wife, Pat, operated a small stable for 30 years and raced in southern Ontario at Greenwood Raceway, the old Barrie Raceway, Kawartha Downs, Georgian Downs, and Woodbine and Mohawk.

The Martins raced mainly claimers, such as Pass Catcher, Battery Park, Beau Willoway, Shecky Herbert, etc.

Stan was the first trainer to use the 'fly mask' in a race, which then evolved into the racing hood (the first horse to use it was Shecky Herbert in 1988).

When physical work became too much, the Martins continued with thestable.ca and Landsdowne Stable 11 and 12.

Please join Standardbred Canada in offering condolences to the family and friends of Stan Martin.

Stan & I both worked in the East York Fire Dept. and both raced standardbred horses, although not together. My sincere condolences to Pat and family.
