Standardbred owner and caretaker Tony Lawrence of Durham, Ont. passed away on Friday, Oct. 22 at the age of 62.
Tony was most recently employed in Mount Forest by Arthur Chrysler for the past 16 years.
Tony had two accomplishments in harness racing over the years. His first was the relationship he built with Hall of Fame horseman Keith Waples, both as an employee and later on he would share ownership of 2013 Battle of Waterloo winner Three Of Clubs, a career winner of nearly $660,000, with Mr. Waples. Tony also had another Battle winner in Magnum J, who won the race in 2015 and earned more than $420,000 lifetime. The third horse he enjoyed success with was Secretsoftheknight, a Somebeachsomewhere Stakes winner in 2012. All three of these horses were trained by his longtime friend Gregg McNair. Although he built several long lasting relationships in the business, there was none stronger than that of Mr. and Mrs. Len Gamble. Although Tony was his toughest critic, he was also the biggest fan of then-up-and-coming driver Doug McNair.
Tony is survived by his brother Bryan (Corrine), sister Mary Ellen and brother Paul (Angie). He also had three nieces, Sarah (Tom), Christine (Matt) and Nicole, and several great nieces and nephews. Tony was predeceased by his parents, Betty Lawrence and Ray Lawrence, along with an infant brother.
As per Tony's wishes, cremation has taken place and there is no visitation.
The family is sure that Tony will be gathered at a table with his former mentor and friends dissecting the next day's programs. He will be missed.
Please join Standardbred Canada in offering condolences to the family and friends of Tony Lawrence.
