BJs Squall, dam of Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame inductee and the fastest racehorse in harness racing history, Bulldog Hanover, passed away at the age of 27 due to age-related issues at Hanover Shoe Farms on Thursday, Jan. 23.
During her broodmare career at Hanover, BJs Squall produced 15 foals with Bulldog Hanover being her 14th foal, refuting the standard theory of older mares not producing good racehorses.
A daughter of Hall Of Fame Immortal Lady Ashley Ann, and sister to millionaires turned sires Betterthancheddar and Courtly Choice, BJs Squall’s progeny earnings total $3,584,309 with seven sub-1:55 performers including Blaise MM Hanover p,1:51f ($517,255) and Bernal Hanover p,1:53.2s ($103,620) in addition to 2022 O’Brien and Dan Patch Horse of the Year, Bulldog Hanover.
BJs Squall was a tough mare herself, racing at two, three, and four while earning $268,595 with seven wins and a record of 1:53.1s. She was retired from broodmare duties in 2019 and was placed in the retired herd at Hanover where she spent the remainder of her days at her leisure.
Please join Standardbred Canada in offering condolences to the connections of BJs Squall.
