Trotter Call Me Hanover and pacer I Wanna Be Geared book ended Sunday afternoon's harness racing card at Clinton Raceway with victories in their divisional Grey/Huron Stakes finals.
Both sophomores pulled off series sweeps having won their first two divisions prior to the finales on May 27 at Clinton and June 2 at Hanover Raceway.
Call Me Hanover ($7.10) captured the first $28,700 final on the card for trotting horses and geldings in a new mark of 2:01.4 for driver Maria Flink and trainer Tommy Andersson.
The Kadabra-Chiptease colt sat behind So Sure (Nick Steward) through early fractions of :30.2 and 1:02 before making his move. He reached up to take over command at the 1:32.3 third quarter mark and drew off by two lengths to win. Favourite Oaklea Uptown (Paul Walker) finished second and Kilmartinliberator (Mark Williams) was third.
The victory was Call Me Hanover's third in four career starts. He is owned by Andersson and Courant Ab.
George Plyley trainee I Wanna Be Geared ($4.50) later won the $29,300 pacing final in 2:00.3 in rein to Brandon Campbell.
Firing to command from post six, the Geartogear-I Wanna Be Queen gelding carved out fractions of :28, :57.1 and 1:28 en route to the one length victory. Macktwowilldew and Lorne House finished second, but were placed back to fifth for causing interference after making a break at the start of the race. Pocket-sitter Reb The Raider and Pat Barr inherited second while Highland Charger and Shawn O'Brien were bumped up to third.
I Wanna Be Geared has won half of his six career starts for owners Scott Maracle, Earl Hill Jr., Harry Einfeldt and Curtis Spillum.
The Grey/Huron Stakes is for Ontario sired four-year-olds and younger that are non-winners of $5,000 lifetime as of midnight April 25, 2012.
Clinton also hosted round two of the Slots Cup Series in which Danterra Racing Stable's Royal Outlook ($2.90) repeated with a seven length romp in 1:57 flat.
In the first of two $15,000 second leg divisions, the four-year-old Royal Mattjesty gelding, driven by Jason Brewer, swept to command from third after the :28-second opening quarter and cruised past middle splits of :57 and 1:27.1 before opening up daylight on his foes. Jetta Rama (Ryan Holliday) came in second while Windsong Harley (Bruce Richardson) finished third.
The Dan Creighton trainee boasts 11 wins this year and has yet to miss the board in 16 starts for earnings totalling $74,510.
Brewer swept the second round of the series as part of a five-win performance on the 12-race card with the front-stepping Machs Beach Boy ($5.60), who turned back a challenge from eventual third place finisher Random Mission (Scott Wray) en route to a two length victory in 1:57.2. Rustlin Cam (Nick Steward) was the runner-up. The race fractions were :30, :59.3, and 1:28.3.
The three-year-old Mach Three gelding earned his initial win of the season while making his eighth start. He is trained by Brad Shakes and owned by Dan Mogridge and Jeffery Oborne.
The Slots Cup Series, sponsored by Racetracks of Ontario Marketing & Promotions (ROMP), is for three and four-year-old Ontario sired pacers that are non-winners of $50,000 life as of January 15, 2012. The series will move to Georgian Downs for the third leg on June 26, followed by stops at Hanover Raceway, Grand River Raceway and Flamboro Downs this summer before culminating on September 8 at Hiawatha Horse Park with a $100,000 final.
