The 2023 Standardbred Horse Sale continued on Tuesday, Nov. 7 at the Pennsylvania State Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and the second day's sale topper was Glowing Lou with bidding surpassing the quarter-million-dollar mark for the popular pacing-bred colt.
Glowing Lou, Hip 346, was purchased for $260,000 by Mac Nichol of Burlington, Ont. Consigned and bred by Vieux Carre Farms, the Sweet Lou colt is the third foal out of the unraced Somebeachsomewhere mare, Teenybopper. His second dam is the O'Brien Award-winning double millionaire, Glowing Report, a full sister to the dam of prolific stallion Well Said.
Well Said's dam Must See had a foal of her own among the top five sellers as Cafe Culture, Hip 252, brought a bid of $195,000. Andrew Harris of Allentown, New Jersey, acting as agent, purchased the Stay Hungry brother to Well Said ($2,690,820 - 1:47.3) from the Preferred Equine Marketing consignment.
The second highest-priced yearling of the session was Travolta Hanover, Hip 366, who was purchased for $255,000 by Bryan S. Montgomery of Cream Ridge, New Jersey, acting as agent. Bred and consigned by Hanover Shoe Farms, the Muscle Hill colt is the fourth foal out of the late Donato Hanover mare, Twice A Night. Travolta Hanover is from the family of 2022 Mohawk Million champ Oh Well ($1,391,684 - 1:51.2).
Verse Nine, Hip 401, was a $225,000 purchase, acquired by Chris Ryder of Allentown, New Jersey. Consigned by Anvil And Lace Farm, the colt from the first crop of Gimpanzee is out of the Trixton mare, Acorn Kronos IT. Verse Nine's family includes international star Magic Tonight ($1,362,397 - 1:52.4f).
Wondrous Blue Chip, Hip 404, also topped the $200,000 mark, with the winning bid of $205,000 from Determination of Montreal, Que. Consigned by Blue Chip Farms, the Father Patrick-Dunk The Donato colt is a half-brother to world champion filly Plunge Blue Chip ($1,596,841 - 1:49.4).
In total, 344 yearlings went through the sales ring during the second session grossing $14,690,000 with an average price of approxiately $42,704. That brings the total gross for the first two days of the yearling sale to $29,913,000 for 497 yearlings sold, resulting in an average price of $60,187.
Through two sessions in 2022, 506 yearlings were sold for more than $35.7 million, with a two-session average of $70,613.
The remaining yearling session will be held on Wednesday at 10 a.m., followed by two mixed sessions on Thursday at 10 a.m. and Friday at 11 a.m.
