Qualifying action at Woodbine Mohawk Park

A little less than a year ago, a two-year-old from the Dr. Ian Moore stable impressed onlookers with an open-length romp in qualifying action at Woodbine Mohawk Park. On Friday, June 19, another rookie pacer duplicated that template to clock the fastest mile of the 14 baby races contested.

The comparison is not a suggestion that two-year-old pacing filly Money Carlo is the next Beau Jangles, but the freshman filly has certainly showed signs of talent in her first two appearances.

With driver Bob McClure at the controls, Money Carlo crossed over to the top from post seven to front her field of nine early. After a :28.2 opening panel, the daughter of Bulldog Hanover-Shes Some Treasure paced strongly through a :57.2 half and 1:26.2 third quarter all by herself. Money Carlo paced home towing a motionless McClure through an effortless :28 final quarter to trip the timer in 1:54.2. Pa Lila finished second, some 11 lengths back for driver Jody Jamieson with Charolais Cattle and James MacDonald in for third.

A sister to speedy stakes winning pacing mare Mikala from the family of Captaintreacherous, Money Carlo was a $243,056 yearling purchase from the Lexington Selected Yearling Sale by owner Brad Grant of Milton, Ont. She was bred by Steve Jones of Montgomery, N.Y.

Trainer Blake MacIntosh sent out four winners during the Friday session, including the co-fastest trotters of the morning.

Song From Heaven was fastest off the car in the morning's fourth qualifier, and the daughter of Green Manalishi S-Chapter Heaven made every call a winning one for driver Doug McNair. After fractions of :30.1, :59.3 and 1:30, Song From Heaven confidently closed in :28.4 to best Queen Of Bs (Matt Bax) by just over three lengths for the 1:58.4 score. Queen G (McClure) completed the top trio.

MacIntosh co-owns Song From Heaven along with Daniel Plouffe of Bromont, Que. and Tim Klemencic of Trenton, Ont. Bred by Ontario-based Rick Zeron Stables of Oakville, James Walker of Port Perry, Jeff Ruch of Innisfil and Dean Lockhart of Collingwood, Song From Heaven was a $42,254 Harrisburg purchase.

Whoopdedoo Hanover found the wire in the same mile time but after a much different journey. Driver Tyler Borth pointed the daughter of Six Pack-Woohoo Hanover to the top from post one, hitting the opening quarter in :30.4 before yielding to Canadian Queen (Mark MacDonald) down the backside. After a pocket trip through the :59.3 half, Whoopdedoo Hanover looped back to the lead and hit the third station in 1:28.4. Popping out from third around the far turn, Treasure King (Jamieson) took her shot at the leader and got a nose in front at the head of the lane but Whoopdedoo Hanover fought back for the 1:58.4 victory by half a length. Canadian Queen stayed for third.

Purchased online for $5,000 USD from breeder Hanover Shoe Farms Inc. of Hanover, Pa., Whoopdedoo Hanover has won both of her qualifying appearances for owners Glenn Dyke of Townsend, De., MacIntosh, Jean Marie Bedard of Laval, Que. and Ozzie MacKay of Moncton, N.B.

Baby races continue at Mohawk on Saturday, June 20, with a 13-dash session slated for male trotters and pacers. The full qualifying session from Friday appears below.
