After allegations of impropriety prompted the state gaming commission to disqualify Plainridge Racecourse from bidding on a slots facility, there's still a chance that expanded gaming could come to the Massachusetts harness racing track.
Numerous reports published on Wednesday indicate that Penn National Gaming has signed an option to buy Plainridge if the Massachusetts Gaming Commission awards the gaming operator the one slots license available in the state.
This attempt at entering the gaming market in Massachusetts marks the third attempt for PNG to secure a gaming location in the state after plans for a resort casino in Springfield as well as a slots location in Tewksbury didn't come through.
Last month, reports surfaced that former track president and CEO Gary Piontkowski had made illegal 'withdrawals' from the track's money room. As a result, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission tossed Plainridge from consideration for expanded gaming.
