Recently retired World Champion and North America Cup winner Sportswriter p,2,1:49.2, 3,1:48.3 ($1,649,411) will stand the 2011 breeding season at Tara Hills
Stud in Port Perry, Ont. for an introductory fee of $6,000.
The three-year-old son of Artsplace–Precious Beauty is currently in Australia at Peppertree Farm, where he will begin his Southern Hemisphere stud career, and will ship back to Tara Hills upon completion of their breeding season.
Tara Hills Stud and Warrawee Farm (Dr. Mike Wilson) have purchased an equity interest in the stallion for an undisclosed price.
“We are very pleased to have two of the most successful Canadian breeders involved with our exciting young stallion," said Southwind Farms Syndicate Manager Michael Klau. "The Ontario Sires Stakes program and Breeders Incentive awards make Ontario a very desirable place to stand a stallion and Tara Hills is a beautiful facility, with a proven track record.”
Trained throughout his career by Casie Coleman and driven by Mark MacDonald, Sportswriter returned from his champion two-year-old campaign to capture the $1.5 million Pepsi North America Cup at Mohawk Racetrack in 1:48.3. Last year at two, he set a World Record when he won the $1 million Metro Pace in 1:49.2 and was named champion two-year-old pacing colt after having won seven of eight starts.
A $50,000 yearling purchase, Sportswriter was campaigned by Steve Calhoun and West Wins Stable (Casie Coleman, Ross Warriner, Zoltan Kovacs) as a two-year-old. Southwind Farms purchased an interest in the colt at the end of his two-year-old season and Peppertree Farm of Cowra, NSW, Australia acquired an interest upon his retirement earlier this year.
