The fans at Rideau Carleton Raceway labeled Haul Away as the one to beat in Sunday’s $130,000 OSS Gold Series final for two-year-old pacing colts and geldings, and the youngster didn’t let down his backers
.
Making just his second start for partners Larry Menary, Denis Breton, Phil Silvestri and Joseph Settimi, the son of Modern Art-Armbro Reno drew away from eight foes to take down his first Gold Series title of the season.
Toughestofall shot to the early lead and had the field at the quarter pole in :27.4, but his lead was a short-lived one. Wellthereyougo rushed up to take the top spot in front of the grandstand, and he went on to front-step to the mid-way point in :57.3 before coming under attack from Windsong Gorgeous and rolling into a break.
Windsong Gorgeous, who drew in from the also eligible list as a result of Future Million being scratched, was just over a length in front at the three-quarter pole in 1:26. Hot on his heels, however, was the even-money favourite Haul Away. Jody Jamieson tipped Haul Away off the rail around the final turn and used a 30-second final quarter to drive away by more than four lengths in a time of 1:56.1. Windsong Gorgeous was second and Code Word rounded out the top three.
Dave Menary took over the training on Haul Away following a private purchase earlier this month. The freshman, who won last week’s elimination in 1:55.1, was a former student in the stable of trainer/driver Joe Hudon. Prior to the purchase the pacer went 3-for-6 while banking $28,720 along the way. Since changing hands, the rookie has added another $85,000 to his resume.
