Despite being a 28-time winner in his career, the pundits at Windsor Raceway didn’t give much respect to the Paul Holzman trainee Cammabis in Sunday’s $13,000 Preferred Pace at the border oval
.
In fact, the six-year-old son of Cambest was sent off as a 30-1 outsider. But that didn’t stop him from lighting up the board for driver Gene Piroski who guided the gelding to the pari-mutuel puzzler.
Cammabis was relegated to last when the starting gate sped away from the field of nine, and he was still parked in that spot at the mid-way point. He improved to be sixth on the rim at the three-quarter pole in 1:24.2, and his explosive kick helped him vault past foes in the lane en route to the 1:53.3 decision. Legal Litigator, who set most of the pace, was second best while Shady Cam held on to finish third after going first over.
Fred Reitberger of Boca Raton, FL owns Cammabis, who has racked up very impressive numbers in Hazel Park’s top pacing class this season. The victory was his 11th of the season in 34 tries, and the lion’s share of the purse boosted his overall earnings to $226,723.
