This morning's eight-pack of qualifying dashes at Mohawk Racetrack saw a pair of notable juvenile trotters rebound from breaks, and also saw a Burlington Stakes winner
cruise over the Campbellville, Ont. oval.
After having made breaks in his last two pari-mutuel starts while racing as the post-time choice, freshman Conway Hall colt Talespinner rebounded with a two and a half-length victory in 1:58 for driver Mario Baillargeon and trainer Ben Baillargeon during Race 3.
Talespinner, the bay that earlier this year captured the $50,000 final of the Bridger Trotting Series, left from the rail this morning and was seventh by 14 lengths at the opening quarter, which was cut in :29.2. Baillargeon and his charge went first up along the backstretch and were fifth, 10 lengths in arrears, by the time the opening half mile was recorded in :59.3. Contesting the lead at the 1:29.2 three-quarters pole, Baillargeon and Talespinner would go on to trot home in :28.3 for the decision.
Muscles Yankee filly Lady Rainbow was another notable two-year-old to get back on track this morning. Having made early breaks in both her elimination and the final of the Peaceful Way Stakes, the bay stayed on her best behaviour for the duration of the morning's first race, even though she sustained broken equipment.
Lady Rainbow finished third in the mile for her trainer/driver Rick Zeron, as it was a two-year-old daughter of Southfork which hit the wire first. Sandhill Angel, who was driven by Gaetan Hebert for trainer Bruce Gilkinson, converted a two-hole trip and posted a half-length victory in 2:01.
Burlington Stakes division winner Keystone Raptor seemed game for the driver-trainer combo of Jack Moiseyev and John Kopas this morning, as the three-year-old son of Astreos recorded a 12 and three-quarter-length, wire-to-wire victory in 1:52.2.
