Driver Scott Zeron has an enviable record so far in Quebec, the province of his birth.
One start, one win.
“It was in a father-son driving challenge in Montreal, six or seven years ago. I had just got my licence (in Ontario at age 18). I won one race, got scratched out of the other. We didn’t win, though. My dad (Rick) didn’t carry his weight,” the 25-year-old recalled with a chuckle.
Scott was five when Rick decided it was time to try the Ontario Jockey Club circuit and moved his family from Montreal, where he’d been a leading driver for a decade.
“Honestly, I have no recollections whatsoever of Montreal,” said Scott, now based in the U.S.
He may have more vivid memories of Quebec as of Sunday, when he’s due to drive one of the favourites, Mach It So, in the $200,000 Prix D’Ete at Hippodrome 3R.
“I know him well. He gets around a half-mile track really well. I drove him (last year) as a three-year-old, and he was great for three-quarters of the year. They took a shot with him in the (Little Brown Jug) but he was sick that day and didn’t make the final.”
Zeron is hoping for a good trip this weekend, on and off the track. He’s got to get to Trois-Rivieres for the Sunday afternoon card after racing in Indiana on Saturday night.
