Red Shores has sent out a pair of preview stories for its cards of live racing this weekend at the Charlottetown Driving Park and Summerside Raceway.
Stakes Stars Invade Charlottetown with PEI Colt Stakes
The PEI Colt stakes has once again attracted the stars of the region when Red Shores plays host to a Saturday double header at 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. The two-year-old colts and fillies will take to the CDP oval for the afternoon program, while the three-year-old colts and fillies will go under the lights for the evening card.
Tobins Fusion, Super S Yzerman and Saulsbrook Alana will highlight the action-packed 14-dash afternoon card in their respective divisions.
Gilles Barrieau will drive Tobins Fusion in Race 5. The colt, owned by Boyd MacDonald and Daniel Ross of PEI and Charles Seymour, NB, has $18,605 banked this season and heads into the race with six wins and a second from eight starts.
Super S Yzerman, with Clare MacDonald listed to drive, is the morning-line favourite in Race 7. MacDonald, who co-owns with Morah Kerr, Greenfield, NS, will need to work out a trip from Post 7 to order to keep his four-race win streak alive.
Saulsbrook Alana, a two-year-old filly from the Reg MacPherson and Kevin MacLean stable, will parade in Race 8 coming off back-to-back winning performances, including a 1:55.1 mile in the Lady Slipper Gold stakes event at Summerside. Brodie MacPhee will handle the driving duties.
First-race post time for the evening card is 7:00 p.m. with Untouchable One shipping in to race for the Dooley Boys racing stable of Halifax, NS. The three-year-old pacer has won his last three starts and is closing in on $81,000 in lifetime earnings. Kenny Arsenault will drive from the rail. Libertys Art, Beach Paradise and Brand of My Own are also triactor candidates.
One of the most anticipated match-ups of the season will take place in Race 8 when The Rev (Danny Romo), Forever Paradise (Brodie MacPhee) and Scarlet Chaser (Gilles Barrieau) hook up in their $5,640 class. Norman Hall, who co-owns Scarlet Chaser, handles the trackside presentations for the PEI Colt stakes, so a win would mean hardware for his own mantle.
Three-year-old filly sensation Dianna Santanna will go after her seventh win of the season when she lines up to Post 4 for catch driver John Holmes, owner Doug MacPhee and trainer Tom Weatherbie in Race 7.
Atlantic Aged Mares Headline Red Shores Summerside Program on Sunday; Trackside Ceremony for PCHC President Philip Doucette
Two divisions of the Atlantic Aged Mares will be showcased at Red Shores’ Summerside Sunday. First-race post time is 1:00 p.m.
Stayoutofmyaffair has drawn the rail in the first Atlantic Aged Mares split for trainer Stephen Quinn, driver Kenny Arsenault and owner Robi Hughes of Stratford. The mare is riding a two-race winning streak and meets the tough General Luckypercy with Gilles Barrieau in the bike. Quinn will also send out Bunny Mach with Jason Hughes driving for Don and Steven MacRae of Vernon Bridge. The field also includes Doober Hoozzitz, Private Joke and JJ Maywest.
Dirt Track Momma will take her ‘A’ game to the legendary Prince County oval from Post 5 in Race 9. The Jonah Moase trainee is coming off a win at Fredericton for young Dale Spence. The five-year-old mare has 15 wins this season. Kenny Arsenault gets the call to drive. JK Special (Walter Cheverie), Lucky Boot Cam (Jason Hughes), Skylark Hanover (Gilles Barrieau), Woodmere Rose (Corey MacPherson) and Mylittlerebel) complete the roster. Each division carries a purse of $3,040.
The top guns will face the gate for Race 12 with Bet the House guarding the pylons for Barrieau and trainer Blaine McKenna. Cambest Kisser is the early favourite with King Of Rock also part of the top choices. Windemere Express, who ran into some traffic trouble last week, is also entered for Earl Watts and driver Michael McGuigan. The power-packed field has Artners in Crime, Narragansett, Creighton Hanover and Machinthesand in the Race 12 showdown.
The program will also feature a special trackside ceremony in honour of Prince County Horsemen’s Club president Phillip Doucette. Doucette passed away suddenly last Sunday after competing in a race at Summerside. The ceremony, which honours fallen drivers, will take place after Race 4.
