Pace made the race for Raymond MacKinnon's Sunshine Lou ($10.10), who lulled his four foes to sleep through a :59.1 first half before sprinting away to a 3-3/4-length victory in Wednesday's (Sept. 1) $1,400 winners-over pacing feature at Inverness Raceway.
Don Gillis Jr. protected the pole with the five-year-old Sunshine Beach gelding, who sprinted to a four-length lead over Dan Dar Mal through a :29.2 first quarter before slamming on the brakes. After facing first-over pressure from Redmond Doucet and Eastcoast Invader through a :59.1 half, Sunshine Lou hit the accelerator, widening his lead steadily up the backstretch and pacing matching :28.1 quarters on the second circuit to cap a 1:55.3 mile. Dan Dar Mal held second; Eastcoast Invader finished third after levelling off.
In 10 starts under MacKinnon's care, Sunshine Lou has recorded three wins, and his Wednesday victory at Inverness was good for a seasonal mark. He has won nine times in his career and has banked just over $49,000.
