Horse races are a game of inches, but just a scant nose is all it took for Bettim Again to win in the Ron MacArthur Memorial Pace as the afternoon feature Sunday (Aug. 7) at Red Shores at the Summerside Raceway.
In the $3,200 featured pace, the Jeff Lilley-trained Bettim Again hit the quarter on top in :28.1, then released Screen Test to the lead before the :58.3 half. The field reached three-quarters in 1:27.4, then Bettim Again began his charge up the passing lane in the stretch drive to win by a whisker in 1:56 over Screen Test with Bugsy Maguire finishing third. Lilley shares ownership of the winning son of Malicious with Blair MacLauchlan of Charlottetown and Ian MacDonald of Lower Sackville, N.S.
David "The Red Rocket" Dowling scored his fifth win on the day and 24th of the Summerside season when piloting Bettim Again, placing him one win behind Ken Murphy.
Driver Dowling and trainer Lilley teamed up earlier on the card as Ubettimagoodone was a neck winner in 1:58 in Race 8. The Springvale driver’s other wins were with Lights Out (2:01) for trainer Blaine McKenna and with the Earl Watts trained duo of Starship Glyde (1:58.1) and Howmac Agustus (1:59.2).
Jaycob Sweet made two trips to the winner’s circle as a trainer-driver scoring with Oakrock Eldorado (2:00.3) and Cinder Angelina (2:00.1).
