Leamington Raceway's 2018 harness racing meet opened with a bang as Abitofalright pulled off a 26-1 upset as the longest shot on the board in Sunday afternoon's first race.
William Kirkpatrick owns, trains and drives the eight-year-old Blissfull Hall gelding, who prevailed by a head over favourite Out Think Em.
Abitofalright led the way through fractions of :29, :59.3 and 1:30.2 in the $4,000 pace while keeping first-over challenger Onimpulse at bay before holding off Out Think Em for the victory in 2:01.2. Onimpulse finished one length back in third.
Horseplayers who backed Abitofalright were rewarded with a $55.70 payout.
The win was the bay pacer's first of the season in six starts and just his second lifetime out of 81 races to go along with 13 seconds and 13 thirds.
After Leamington's 2017 leading trainer Kirkpatrick picked up his first win of the meet, the track's top driver Tyler Borth got his in a neck decision in the second race as the popular 11-year-old pacer Amazing Quest ($3.80) won for the 78th time in his career. Borth won alternate races from that point on.
Amazing Quest's trainer George Robinson enjoyed a perfect day going three-for-three on the nine-race card, with Borth also driving Super Macho Man ($5.30) and Remus Blue Chip ($5.20) to wins for the Windsor horseman.
Live harness racing continues at Leamington every Sunday through October.
