Matthew Bax celebrated his first career win in the driver's seat behind trotter The Mame Event in the ninth race on Saturday night at Kawartha Downs.
Bax got away in third with the seven-year-old son of Chip Chip Hooray before sending him to the top past the half-mile mark. The Mame Event, the 5-2 second choice in the field, then opened up eight and a quarter lengths on his fellow $5,500 claiming trotters over the sloppy track before hitting the wire in 1:59.3. Alltheway Abra finished second in rein to Kevin Austin ahead of favourite JC Chaser and Brad Rae.
The win was the first in 20 starts for the 23-year-old Peterborough, Ont. reinsman.
The Mame Event is trained and owned by Bax's uncle Russell of Baxmar Holsteins Ltd.
Bax, the son of trainer John Bax, will be competing in Sunday evening's Coville Cup Drivers Challenge at Rideau Carleton Raceway.

A nice win, finally. Just listen to your dad John, and you should do all right. Paul M drives some of the Bax horses, and you can get valuable tips from him.
How did you like the slop?
You had 8 1/4 lengths on top. Some drivers are good in the goo. Trouble is, most tracks in Ontario are FAST every night.
Keep on winning!!!!
