Ajax Slots Revenue To Go To Whitby?

Published: August 27, 2012 02:04 pm EDT

It has been reported that the Town of Ajax has agreed to send a percentage of its future revenue from the slot-machine area at Ajax Downs to the Town of Whitby. The proposed deal would be contingent on the Town of Whitby not considering itself a willing host municipality to land an expanded gaming facility under the OLG's gaming modernization plan.

An article by durhamregion.com explains that the proposed deal would see Ajax send 15 per cent of its future gaming revenue derived from the slots at the raceway to Whitby.

"As mayor and council, every once in a while you are confronted with truly difficult decisions, and this has been one of them," Ajax Mayor Steve Parish was quoted as saying. "When I compare the risk of the loss of the whole facility and the jobs and the revenue and everything that that entails, and making an educated, secure arrangement, I think the latter is the better."

The proposition is to be addressed by Whitby's council on September 10.

This is almost opposite of what we have been seeing and complaining about. Here is a logical approach by a group of politicians. Note that Whitby is not even greedy here and the amount is only 15%. I applaud this cooperation.

Small tangent here. Isn't it about time that Pickering, Ajax and Whitby all become one city? Just call it Durham City (didnt give that a lot of thought) and eliminate all kinds of duplicate municipal functions. As an example this vote would never have to take place.

Anyway I will just enjoy this for now if it is passed.

This idea of Steve Parish sharing the slot revenue with the town of Whitby could snow ball for example, with Cavan Township and the city of Peterborough and other jurisdictions. Now that would be a real problem for Mr. Duncan and Mr. Godfrey. All of a sudden Mr. Tannanbaum could find himself way out on a financial limb with the voters of Ontario holding the proverbial saw. sincerely Bruce T. Winning
