Hugh Heff. Northside Downs. The rail. Winners Over Pace.
If those were four tiles in the New York Times' popular game of Connections on Saturday, Aug. 23, they would link together with the common tie of driver Randy Getto's 1:57.4 winner.
Sent off as the 1/4 choice in the field of seven, Hugh Heff did all the heavy lifting on the front end, pressured through the opening fractions of :28.3 and :58.2 by Big Engine (Evan Wilson). When that first-over bid started to stall, Hugh Heff found another gear. After a 1:29.2 third quarter, Getto flipped the switch and Hugh Heff hurried home in :28.2 for the 1:57.4 score. QTs Charlie (Shawk Lynk) finished second, 3-1/2 lengths back, with Thunder Alley (Gerard Kennedy) rounding out the triactor ticket.
Randy Getto, Susan Macsween of River Ryan and Wayne Hardy of Sydney, N.S. hold the papers on Hugh Heff, a five-year-old son of Betterthancheddar - Danika Patrix. The Dana Getto trainee now sports a career summary of 41-14-6 from 87 lifetime starts with more than $115,000 in purses earned. He returned $2.50 to win as the public choice, winning at this level for the 17th time since arriving in Nova Scotia last year.
