After Matthew Trelford made his first career training start last week with Lastkickathecan and took home a fourth-place finish, the duo came back on Monday (Aug. 21) at Woodbine Mohawk Park to give Trelford his first training win.

Lastkickathecan drew the rail in the field of nine going for $22,600 in the fourth leg of the Ontario Sires Stakes Grassroots for three-year-old trotting fillies. Louis-Philippe Roy was in the bike.

Roy and the Trelford trainee got away seventh, 11 lengths off the leading Southwind Chardnay (Tyler Borth) as she hit the first quarter in :27. Northern Charlotte (Bob McClure) took command of the field while an outer charge was sparked by Sweet Detrmination (Doug McNair). Lastkickathecan moved to the outside, but sat ninth through the half in :58.1. As the three-quarters was reached in 1:27.2, Lastkickathecan continued to close the gap between herself and the leader, but continued in sixth as the final turn came to an end. Down the stretch, Lastkickathecan widened her strides and flew from the far outside. She outsprinted three challengers in the lane to win by a half length in 1:56. Sweet Detrmination finished second with Northern Charlotte taking the show spot.

Trelford owns Lastkickathecan (Wheeling N Dealin-Simone Hall) as the three-year-old filly moved her seasonal record to 6-2-0 in 10 starts. With odds of 12-1 going to the gate, the filly returned $26 to win.

Pretty Special lived up to her namesake in the second division of the OSS Grassroots and collected the winner's share of the $23,000 purse offering.

Chris Christoforou and Pretty Special got away fifth in the field of 10 as Match Meif You Can (Doug McNair) handed out the first quarter in :27.2 and half in :58.1. Christoforou pulled his right line and moved into third from the outside at the three-quarters in 1:28.2. Pretty Special passed pocket-sitter Shiny New Penny (James MacDonald) and leading Match Meif You Can in the lane to win by 2-1/2 lengths in 1:55.4. Shiny New Penny finished second with Match Meif You Can ending in third.

Camilla Christoforou trains Pretty Special (Resolve-Pretty Crafty) for Brad Grant. She collected her first win this season and second career win. She paid $7.10 to win.
