Leamington Raceway will honour the late Marty Adler, the former voice of Leamington and Windsor Raceway, this Sunday, Aug. 24.
Born on July 1, 1943, Adler grew up in Windsor, Ont., where he helped with his family’s bakery business before finding his true calling in harness racing and broadcasting. Over the years, he owned and co-owned many horses, maintaining his own stable while also training and driving. His love for the sport extended beyond participation — Adler became a passionate advocate for harness racing, especially during the difficult period following the closure of Windsor Raceway.
In 1969, at just 26 years old, Adler got his big break when he was hired as the announcer at Windsor Raceway. His distinctive voice and flair soon took him to other tracks including Greenwood, Mohawk, Garden City, Hazel Park and later Leamington. Alongside his racetrack duties, Adler produced television series and built a respected career in broadcasting. He worked in radio at stations across Ontario, including CKLW in Windsor, and went on to become a sportscaster with CBC, TSN and Pass Sports of Detroit.
Adler was an announcer for nearly 50 years, with his final calls coming at Leamington just before COVID-19 in 2020. Even while facing health challenges, he remained dedicated to his craft. In 2023, he founded Amherstburg’s first and only radio station, 107.9 FM CKBG “The Berg,” continuing to broadcast until his passing in August 2024.
This Sunday, Leamington Raceway will celebrate Marty Adler’s remarkable life and career with a day in his honour, featuring videos, photos and special tributes throughout the program.
Admission and parking are free. Post time is 1 p.m.
Racing continues every Sunday at Leamington Raceway through Nov. 2.
