Two-year-old pacing fillies were in the spotlight at Alberta Downs on Monday, as they butted heads in a trio of $22,700 divisions of the Alberta Starlett
.
Im Sheila lowered the track record when she romped to a 1:56.4 score at odds of 68-1 for trainer/driver Gary Clark. The daughter of Brandons Cowboy-Barnyard Dance drew off to win by 3-1/2 lengths over HF Georges Kiss. Just Saucy grabbed the show dough.
The victory demolished the former track standard of 2:00 set by The Missing Sock on July 26, 2010.
It was a maiden-breaking victory for the filly, who is owned by Clark and partner Catherine Case of Sexsmith, AB. Purchased for $1,200 from last year’s ASHA Yearling Sale, Im Sheila has banked $11,902 to date.
Wrangler Starlight took the next division in 1:58.4 for trainer/driver Keith Clark. It was the first win in two tries for the daughter of Camystic-Southwind Holley, who sat a pocket trip and rallied to win by a half-length margin over race favourite The Missing Sock. Minettas Nightstar was third.
Dr. Maurice Stewart and Maureen Stewart of Leduc, AB bred and own the youngster, who has managed to stash away $11,902 in earnings.
Barona Josie made her pari-mutuel debut a winning in the final division thanks to a 1:58 victory for driver Bill Tainsh, Jr. and trainer Doug Stout. The Brandons Cowboy-Vanessa Hall miss took over command in the late stages of the contest and sprinted home in a :29-second clip to win by 2-1/2 lengths over Silver Buckle. Third prize was earned by Miss Conduct.
Stout co-owns the filly with her breeders, the Barona Yearlings of Spruce Grove, AB.
