Three-year-old pacers took center stage on Saturday evening at Killarney for the second leg of the Golden Boy and Silk Lace Stakes

In the lone $7,214 Golden Boy division for colts and geldings, Cool Thing rallied from off the pace to score in a career-best 2:03.4 for trainer/driver Roland Rey, who shares ownership with Allen Brydon of Neepawa, MB. The homebred son of Gates Brown-Little Wild Thing got away last in the seven-horse field, but made his move at three-quarters and sprinted home for the one and a half length victory over his stablemate P Js Abba (George Isman). Spin Your Spell (Dallas McGee) was third.
Unraced at two, Cool Thing is now a two-time winner with $5,514 earned, and has yet to finish out of the money in five lifetime starts.
Rey also drove and bred the winner of the first of two $3,675 Silk Lace divisions for fillies. The Gates Brown-Exuberine Hanover miss Great Gates converted from a pocket trip to win in 2:04.4 for trainer and owner Arthur Rey. The pacesetter, Bubble Promise (Greg Manning) finished over two lengths back in second and Special Pool (Isman) was third in the four-horse affair.
Great Gates has won four times and finished second twice in six starts. Her earnings now total $6,803.
Heartland Icicle put forth the most eye-catching victory of the night in the second Silk Lace split when she wired the field of five to win by 19 lengths in 2:03.2 for trainer/drive Philip Griesbrecht and owners Al Car Farms and Carole Drader of Brookdale, MB. Heartland Lacey (Ryan Grundy) was the runner-up and Bikini Babe (Richard Remillard) rounded out the top three.
The Solid Ice-Hah filly is now six-for-eight in her sophomore campaign with $12,570 earned and has yet to finish off the board this year. Heartland Icicle, who has earned $15,417 lifetime, sports a record reading 7-4-5 in 17 starts.
