Peach Pie Will Do Upsets In ATSS

The Tad The Stud colt Peach Pie Will Do kicked from second over to deliver an 18-1 upset in the second of two $10,520 Atlantic Sires Stakes (ATSS) for trotting sophomores on Tuesday (Aug. 17) at Charlottetown Driving Park.

Even-money favourite Dusty Lane Milo led the field to a :29.1 first quarter and soon faced first-over pressure from A Little Go Go moving to a 1:00.1 half. Driver Brodie MacPhee secured cover with Peach Pie Will Do behind the first-over foe as he pressed closer towards Dusty Lane Milo. Perched past three-quarters in 1:30.4, MacPhee motored Peach Pie Will Do off a helmet and slid through the stretch to nab a quarter-length victory in 2:00.2 over Dusty Lane Milo. A Little Go Go finished third.

Owned by Jordan MacKay, Andrew Brown, Shirley Symes and Allard Racing Inc., Peach Pie Will Do won his first race from three starts, earning $5,654. Chris MacKay trains the $39.70 winner.

Dusty Lane Apollo ground uncovered in the first ATSS Three-Year-Old Trot to win at the beam in 2:04.3. Another son of Tad The Stud, Dusty Lane Apollo raced fifth as First One Here took the field by the quarter in :30.3. Driver Kenny Arsenault then tipped the Dan MacDonald trainee off the pegs moving to a 1:01.4 half and pressed forward as First One Here retreated, giving the lead to Fireball Friday before three-quarters in 1:33.4. Dusty Lane Apollo dug into the new leader around the final turn and eventually got the better through the stretch, putting a neck in front at the finish. Galeowind, the odds-on favourite, recovered from a break at the start to finish third.

Owned by But We Here Now Stable, Dusty Lane Apollo won his second race from six starts this season, earning $6,731. He paid $4.10 to win.

Cadillac kicked off the pylons late to take the first $10,260 division of the ATSS Two-Year-Old Trot. Trainer-driver Clare MacDonald sat at the pegs while Majian Raptor set a tempo of :31.2 and 1:02.3 before that one retreated and 2-5 favourite Mr Miller took the lead, clicking three-quarters in 1:34.2. Cadillac reeled in the late leader through the stretch to win by a length in 2:04.3 with Majian Raptor fading to third.

Co-owned by MacDonald with Wayne Burley, Cadillac won his first race from four starts, earning $10,184. He paid $6.60 to win.

Up Helly Aa wired his competition in the other $10,260 ATSS Two-Year-Old Trot, stopping the clock in 2:04.4. The Armbro Barrister colt, driven by Kenneth MacDonald, powered to an open-length lead moving to a :31.3 first quarter and strolled to a 1:03.1 half and through three-quarters in 1:35.2 to then repel far-turn challenger Moonshine Monday and win by 4-3/4 lengths. Headline Howie rode the pylons for third.

Giving trainer Clare MacDonald a sweep of the ATSS events for two-year-olds, Up Helly Aa won his fourth race from five starts, earning $21,837. The $2.90 winner competes for owner Riley Farms Ltd.
