Leagues' Appeal To Be Heard

On Friday, August 14, the U.S. 3rd circuit Court of Appeals agreed to hear the case of the four major sports leagues and the NCAA attempting to stop or delay sports betting in Delaware.

The three appellate judges asked for written arguments this week, and set a fast-track hearing for next Monday, August 24, in Philadelphia. In that hearing it will hear arguments from the leagues for an emergency order to stop Delaware while their lawsuit claiming the Delaware plan is illegal is heard in court.

The appeal is from the decision of chief district judge Gregory M. Sleet denying the leagues petition for injunction and setting a trial date of December 7. Were that decision to be upheld, it would mean Delaware could start sports betting, including single game betting, with the opening of the National Football League season next month.

Delaware governor Jack Markell, meanwhile, inspected Harrington Raceway & Casino Friday, checking on the track’s planned sports betting facility.
