Two-year-old trotting colts took centre stage at Georgian Downs on Tuesday evening, with Enough About You clocking the quickest mile of eight Grassroots divisions.
Starting from Post 1 in the third $24,000 division, Enough About You and driver Billy Davis Jr. took command of the race before the halfway marker and cruised home unchallenged in 1:59.2. The Mutineer colt crossed the finish line eight and one-quarter lengths ahead of Ballykeel Pegasus and local favourite Dewer Kash, who is owned by Brilo Farms of Sharon and Thomas Saunders of Newmarket.
Danny Girard trains Enough About You for Wheelhouse Racing Stable of Mississauga. Tuesday’s outing was the colt’s first, coming on the heels of an impressive qualifier at Mohawk Racetrack on July 30 that saw him hit the wire 10 and three-quarter lengths on top in 2:01.4.
Driver Randy Waples piloted a pair of favourites to Grassroots victory on Tuesday, scoring the first in Race 6 with Power Move. The pair sat in the middle of the pack for most of the mile, swinging to the outside at the three-quarter mile marker and sprinting home to a one and three-quarter length victory in 2:00.1.
Muscle On Broadway, owned by Steve Organ of Aurora and P C Wellwood Enterprises Inc. of Cambridge, closed well to be second and Buddy Hally rounded out the top three.
Waples crafted Power Move’s first lifetime win for trainer Ted Jacobs of St. Catharines and his partners Carol and Glen Campbell of Kingston. While Tuesday marked the Muscle Mass son’s first victory, Power Move has been a model of consistency through the first half of the Grassroots season, recording two seconds and one third.
As he did with Power Move, Waples settled Muscle Max into the middle of the field and then moved to the outside at the halfway marker. Muscle Max made steady progress in the outer lane, reeling in pacesetter North York in the stretch. The Muscle Mass son halted the teletimer at 2:00, hitting the wire one and one-half lengths ahead of North York and Scottish Blue.
Pat Hunt conditions Muscle Max for owner-breeder Glengate Farms of Campbellville. The colt made his Grassroots debut at Woodstock Raceway on Aug. 3, finishing a closing second.
Doug Brown copied Waples’ race strategy in the fifth division and delivered the same result to trainer Wayne Bloomfield and owner Karen Carroll of Shedden. El Diablo Rojo swept up from midfield in the final quarter to claim a 2:00.1 victory.
Just Make Believe, owned by Aurora resident Steve Organ, Darryl Drain of Tweed, ASA Farm of Norwood and Thomas Nurmi of Washington, DC, finished one and one-half lengths behind the winner in second and favourite Ale Ale Jandro had to settle for third.
A chestnut son of Striking Sahbra, El Diablo Rojo had finished fourth once and fifth twice in the first three Grassroots events of the freshman trotting colt season.
In the second last Grassroots split trotting specialist Trevor Ritchie and Super Duke led the field from start to finish, digging hard in the stretch to secure a half length victory over You Rock My World, who is owned by Douglas McCarthy of Holland Landing. Krim Boughalem completed the triactor.
Super Duke’s 2:01.1 victory was his first in three starts, two in the Grassroots and one in the Gold Series. Blackstock resident William James trains the gelded son of Duke Of York and Millie Wonka for his partners and fellow breeders 2159884 Ontario Inc. of Bowmanville.
The other Grassroots trophies were captured by Mo Dhabi in 2:00.4; Beyond Sanity in 2:02.2; and Talking Story in 2:00.1.
The two-year-old trotting colts and geldings make their second last regular season Grassroots start at Rideau Carleton Raceway on August 24. Grassroots action continues at Georgian Downs this Saturday, Sept. 18 when the exciting three-year-old pacing colts arrive at the Innisfil oval.
