Clinton Raceway welcomed fans on a beautiful Sunday afternoon (Aug. 14) for live harness racing action and for the annual wiener dog race. Fans packed the Huron County oval to set a season record for attendance.
A field of six wiener dogs lined up to contest the annual wiener dog race after Race 6. The Dachshunds were racing to become the next Clinton Raceway Wiener Dog champion after defending champion Ellie was unable to defend her title. The 20-meter race was over in less than five seconds. And when the dust settled, the heavyweight Parker took the win for owners Lee Ann and Corrina Trachsel.
In addition to the annual wiener dog race, it was Harness The Hope Day. Over $5,000 was raised for the charity that directly donates to various cancer organizations that provides direct support programs for those faced with a cancer diagnosis and that provide breast cancer awareness, research and improved treatments.
The day was capped with the Harness The Hope Pace that lined up behind the gate for Race 10. The class-dropping Gypsy Merlot and driver Paul Mackenzie settled in third before making the first-over grind just past the halfway point. The six-year-old mare made quick work of race leader after fast fractions up front and pulled away to a two-length score.
The Trevin Shive trainee visited the winner’s circle for the 27th time in her career, pushing her bankroll to $193,668.
Clinton Raceway returns to action on Sunday (Aug. 21) for Young Guns Miniature Horse Racing. The Prospect Series also comes to town for two-year-old trotting fillies and two-year-old pacing colts and geldings. Racing action gets underway at 1:30 p.m. (EDT).
