Greystone Cash Learning The Ropes

Published: July 9, 2009 04:58 pm EDT

“He’s a bit of a slow learner,” says trainer Bruce Goit of his protégé, Greystone Cash. “Not the sharpest knife in the drawer.”

But if this gelded son of Million Dollar Cam is a little challenged intellectually, he seems to be making up for it with pacing talent. Over the past two weekends at Mohawk Racetrack, the three-year-old was second to Foolish Justice in the $20,000 opening round of the Summertime Pacing Series, and followed up that effort with a win over the same rival in the series sequel, shaving a full second off his lifetime speed mark in the process.

As he focuses on the $57,000 series final, this Saturday night, Goit has to admit, “He’s starting to get the hang of it now.”

A private purchase by owner Patrick Ryan of London, Ont., this past April, Greystone Cash came “with some issues,” Goit says. “Mostly between his ears. The biggest thing is he’s scared of his own shadow. All those little x’s on his race record, they’re times when he saw his own shadow and made a break. He’s my little vampire. I pray for overcast days!

“Night racing suits him a lot better.”

Though changes in equipment have failed to fully alleviate Greystone Cash’s shadow sensitivities, he has been improving every week, Goit says. “I’ll be disappointed if he doesn’t hit the board in the final. He’s as good as any of the horses in there, and the five hole is perfect for him. He doesn’t have much gate speed, he’s definitely a closer… so he should float out of there and catch some cover, or not, he really doesn’t care.

“I was a bit surprised that he was 10-1 [in the morning line], but there’s no pressure that way.”

The Summertime Pacing Series final is the highlight of Mohawk’s card for Saturday night, July 11. It’s Race 8, post time 9:57 p.m.

I like this horse in this race from a handicapping point of view: Under-rated trainer with a good record and a driver who maybe should get more drives at this level. 10/1 is a heck of a good price for a horse who can close like this one. I hope he's still that price at the window on Saturday!!
