Two-year-old Maritime trotting champion Scarlet Patti will make her sophomore debut in one of four $4,400 Maple Leaf Trot divisions during a full 15-race card of stakes Wednesday at Summerside Raceway
.
Scarlet Patti is the 5-2 favourite in the morning line and has drawn Post 3 in the second Maple Leaf Trot division (Race 8). The homebred daughter of Pjs Nabby-Scarlet Nite won 11 of her 13 starts last year including the Atlantic Breeders Crown, Maritime Breeders and Island Breeders finals for trainer-driver Darryl MacLean and his father, Gord MacLean. She banked over $35,000 never finishing worse than second.
The MacLeans will also send out longshot Scarlet Extreme in the first division (Race 4), who will look to break her maiden from Post 1. The daughter of Pjs Nabby-Scarlet Eve has yet to hit the board in six lifetime starts and will face some stiff competition in her outside starters including Diamond Mine. The gelded son of Pjs Nabby-RRR Diamond, trained and co-owned by Cynthia MacDonald, will leave from Post 3 with Kenny Arsenault in the bike. Diamond Mine put together a record of 2-5-3 in 14 outings as a freshman earning over $20,000. He captured two Atlantic Sires Stakes events and was second best in the Atlantic Breeders Crown and Maritime Breeders final. Popular choice Southfield Sam takes the next position over for trainer Robert Bowness with Terry Gallant listed to drive.
B J Eldorado and Mike Stevenson gets the nod as the early 5-2 favourite from Post 5 in the third division (Race 10) for trainer, owner and breeder Bert Honkoop while Edward Smallwood’s Rustico Nicky is the final (Race 12) favourite starting from Post 6.
Wednesday’s card also features the first Maritime stakes test of the season for two-year-old pacers and trotters. A total of 11 Callbeck Stakes are scheduled with five $5,600 divisions for pacing colts, four $6,500 divisions for pacing fillies and a pair of $5,800 events for trotters. These stakes are named in honour of George Callbeck, the first president of the PEI Colt Stakes and a member of the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame.
