Odds-on favourite Surrealist was sent postward as the public’s choice on Sunday (July 30) at Inverness Raceway during the $2,100 Johnny & Margaret Allan Ian Pace. The 11-year-old Modern Art gelding did not disappoint for his co-owning trainer, Dana Getto, and driver Alex MacQuarrie.
Surrealist started from Post 4 and looked to cross over in the dash –which was slotted as the card’s Race 9 finale – but the rest of the field had other ideas.
Rusty Riley, who is another Dana Getto trainee that was driven by Randy Getto, was sent straight to the point from Post 2 and refused to relinquish the lead to Surrealist.
Rusty Riley hung Surrealist out wide through splits of :28.2, :58 and 1:27.3. Surrealist was three wide and rolling at the third call. Maybe the rough treatment spurred him on, but Surrealist surely dug in through the final quarter. He refused to give up and ended up gutting out a three-quarters of one-length victory in 1:57.2.
Intended Royalty (driven by Redmond Doucet) finished second and Euchred finished further back in third. Rusty Riley finished fourth, beaten more than six lengths.
