Tequila Slammer and Baileys Breeze were similar in the sense that they both closed at 5-1 in the wagering, but they employed different tactics to win their respective
divisions of the Bud Light Stakes at Flamboro Downs on Sunday evening.
The lion’s share of the purse in the $51,455 opening division went to the connections of Tequila Slammer, who closed from far off the pace to take her assignment in 2:01.1 for driver Steve Byron. The Yankee Glide-Silly Senorita filly was sixth and third-over with the first half of the tilt in the books, before making an explosive brush to join the leaders heading into the final turn.
She sustained her drive to the finish by virtue of :29.2 closing speed, and that was good enough to propel her to the three-length decision over Linda Lovelegs. Onehallofawoman grabbed the show dough.
John Bax conditions and his Parkhill Stud Farm co-owns the youngster with Glengate Farms of Campbellville, ON. It was the second lifetime start for the trotting lass, who captured a $64,468 division of the Robert Stewart Stakes in her pari-mutuel debut earlier this month. The $45,000 purchase from last year’s Harrisburg Yearling Sale has banked $57,961 to date.
A gate-to-wire mission got Baileys Breeze to the winner’s circle in her $51,455 division for trainer/driver Carl Jamieson, who co-owns the Angus Hall-Balanced Breeze miss with Tom Kyron, Dr. Robert Boyce and George Harrison.
Jamieson chopped out panel of :28.3, :59.3 and 1:30.2 with his charge before cruising home in :31 seconds to post the 2:01.2 tally. Runner-up Ruling Class was more than two lengths in arrears, and so was third-place finisher Canada Cool.
The half-sister to Casual Breeze (1:53.1 - $1,347,330) was the sale topper at last year’s Canadian Open Yearling Sale. When the hammer fell, he sold for $102,000.
