Ontario Sires Stakes graduate Western Silk was firing on all cylinders during this morning’s qualifiers at Mohawk Racetrack, and trainer Casie Coleman is hoping for more of the same on Saturday night at Georgian Downs with the career winner of $1.6 million.
The five-year-old daughter of Western Terror-Extemporaneous, who was a disappointing fifth in her latest outing – an elimination for the Ellamony Classic - at Flamboro Downs on June 16, bounced back with a 12-length tally in what will be a nice tune up for this weekend’s Master Series Final for older pacing mares at the Innisfil oval.
In rein to Scott Zeron, Western Silk went coast-to-coast in this morning’s qualifier. She strolled to the quarter pole in :29.1 before picking up the tempo in the backstretch. She hit the half in :56.4 and the three-quarter pole in 1:25.2 before finishing off her foes with a :27.4 final frame en route to the 1:53.1 decision.
The 26-time winner will look to avenge last year’s sixth-place finish in the Masters Series Final for older pacing mares.
Stablemate Persistent also turned in an impressive qualifying victory earlier this morning. After finishing eighth in the final of the Fan Hanover Stakes, the three-year-old daughter of Western Ideal-Cams Leading Lady returned to the Campbellville oval and redeemed herself with a 1:53.4 decision for driver Scott Zeron. The youngster is gearing up for the Town Pro Series at Mohawk.
A total of nine qualifiers went postward during this morning’s session, and the other winners were Thunderaway (1:59.1), Tale To Tell (1:59.1), The Only One (1:59.1) in addition to freshmen winners including Seeuinthespring (1:58.4), Yohansbastion Mach (1:58), Prynne Hanover (1:58.3) and Schoolhouse Rock (2:03.2).
