Miki Shan N delivered a dominating performance in the $50,000 Governor’s Plate Final, presented by Summerside Chrysler Dodge, on Saturday, July 19 at Red Shores at the Summerside Raceway.
Miki Shan N crushed his rivals with a jaw-dropping :26.3 final quarter for driver Jason Hughes and trainer Chris MacKay in a final time of 1:53 for owners Kap Singh Racing Stable of Yorktown Heights, N.Y., Stephen Klunowski of North York, Ont., Earl Hill Jr. of Ohsweken, Ont., and Donald MacRae of Vernon Bridge, P.E.I.
The Kiwi-bred powerhouse seized control early and never looked back, carving out fractions of :27.2, :57.4 and 1:26.2 before drawing off by 8-3/4 lengths in a front-end tour de force. Bounty Hunter (Ken Arsenault) was a clear second while Tony Too Tall (Myles Heffernan Sr.) came up the inside to finish third. Miki Shan N paid $2.30 to win.
Miki Shan N, a six-year-old Always B Miki-Yankee Dream stallion, earned his 14th career win in 51 starts as he increased his earnings to $212,940. He has won four straight races and seven in 15 tries this campaign.
The Governor’s Plate win was the first for Hughes and second for trainer MacKay, who previously won the race with Do Over Hanover in 2017.
It was a feature sweep for trainer MacKay, who had three wins on the program, as Plain Jane ($19) won the $14,000 Ruby Chappell Memorial Open Mares Final in 1:56.2 with Brodie MacPhee in the bike for owners Leigh and Faith Gavin of Tignish, P.E.I. Sitting the pocket through :28.2, :59.1, and 1:27.4 sections, Plain Jane gunned down pacesetter Acefortyfour Dome (Jason Hughes) in the stretch and paced clear by a half-length for the 1:56.2 victory. Sugar Bowl (Gilles Barrieau) finished third after a first-up effort.
Plain Jane, a Shadow Play-Ruthie Jane mare, won for the 26th time in 113 career starts. The seven-year-old has earned $114,933. She is two-for-11 this year.
Bouncing back from a fifth-place Governor’s Plate elimination finish, Bee Two Bee ($4.40) tied the week-old track record for an aged pacing stallion as he won the $15,000 Bob Dewar Memorial Governor’s Plate Consolation with a 1:51.4 score for Hughes, trainer Ashley Gamester, and owners Blair MacLauchlan and MacRae. Bee Two Bee now shares the record with Miki Shan N, who set it in his elimination win last week. All Bets On Tex (Campbell) finished second, 2-3/4 lengths back, followed by Saulsbrook Ian (Corey MacPherson). It was the first time since Marc Campbell in 2021 that a driver won both the consolation and final. Bee Two Bee, an eight-year-old intact son of Sunshine Beach-Bee Fullof Steinam, won his sixth race in 17 outings this year.
Windemere Saddy ($11.40) took a two-hole ride to victory in the $8,500 Ruby Chappell Memorial Open Mares Consolation. She stopped the clock in 1:55.1 for trainer Saul Lanigan, who co-owns the four-year-old daughter of Malicious-Hart Of Windemere with Shane Esson, Darcy Doyle, and Isaac Schurman.
In the $7,500 Andrew Perry Memorial Open Trot, Fight Song ($4.60) delivered a statement mile, opening up by 10-1/2 lengths to win in 1:57.3 for Hughes, Gamester and owner MacRae. Curadh (Ryan Desroche) was best of the rest, while Buckhead Ridge (Marc Campbell) rallied for third after a miscue at the start. Fresh off a track record performance at Red Shores Charlottetown last week, Fight Song, a six-year-old Kadabra-Fortunes Of Fables gelding, set a new aged male trotting track record in his Red Shores Summerside start, erasing the 1:58.1 mark set by New Legacy in 2023. Fight Song has won four of 20 attempts in 2025.
A pair of $17,180 Atlantic Sires Stakes A divisions for three-year-old pacing colts also provided fireworks.
All My Lovin ($28) launched a perfectly-timed attack for driver Adam Merner to nail odds-on favourite Malevolent (Paul Langille) by a half-length at the wire in 1:53.1 in Race 9, setting a new track record for a sophomore pacing male. Bentley (Campbell) was third. The victory was a career-best for the Malicious-Lovineveryminute gelding, trained by Earl Watts for Windemere Farms, Brian&Ira Wallach Racing, Debbie Denney, and Clive Balderston. The mile lowered the 1:53.3 standard set by Tobins Chester in 2024. The winning gelding improved to three-for-eight on the season.
Phil My Beer ($2.40) delivered on his heavy-favourite status in Race 14, controlling every step of the mile to win by 1-3/4 lengths in 1:56.3 for Marc Campbell and trainer Landon Campbell. Rosetown Eclipse (Corey MacPherson) was a game second, while Here On Earth (Paul Langille) completed the triactor. Phil My Beer, a son of Shanghai Phil-Hazel, is now three-for-nine this year for owners Brady Doyle, Ryan MacLeod, Kent MacDonald, and Brent Campbell.
Flamin Fredy ($5.50), Chromed Up ($7.10), and Big Pond Cash ($2.20) won the Atlantic Sires Stakes B divisions.
Marc Campbell claimed the Basil Whelan Memorial trophy on the evening as leading driver of Governor’s Plate Week 2025.
