A month after his national record-equalling mile, Fashion Frenzie returned to the Woodbine Mohawk Park winner’s circle as he won the $36,000 Preferred Trot on Tuesday, July 15.

Louis-Philippe Roy commanded speed from the gelding from post five but elected to sit in third as Osceola (Doug McNair) marched forward into the first turn to cut the opening quarter of :27.1. Fashion Frenzie commenced a backstretch brush approaching five-eighths and glided his way to the front before the half in :56.3.

He maintained a moderate tempo to three-quarters in 1:25 and was called on by Roy for maximum effort at the top of the stretch with Osceola gearing up from the pocket. Osceola was never able to make it past the leader’s wheel though, and Fashion Frenzie powered to the line to win by a length in 1:52. Osceola finished second, and Quebec Hanover (Tyler Borth) held third in a blanket finish. The winner returned $3.10.

Fashion Frenzie, who became Canada’s co-fastest trotter ever on June 16, earned his 31st career win in his 67th start and increased his lifetime bankroll to $1,402,667. Eric Nadeau trains the seven-year-old son of Archangel-Striking Fashion for Ecurie Francis Richard Inc., Pierre Guillemette, and Sylvain Richard, all of Becancour, Que., and Gestion Mario Bourgea of Stanbridge-East, Que. The gelding is four-for-10 this year.

Team Jamieson swept the two $25,000 Ontario Sires Stakes Grassroots three-year-old pacing male divisions on the card, highlighted by Fifth And Five’s lifetime-best performance in an action-packed second split.

Jody Jamieson landed him fifth and maintained position at the pylons as a two-pronged speed duel between Twin B Fresh Bet (McNair) and Shadow Of An Angel (Trevor Henry) raged through the quarter of :26.4. Favourite Backup Plan (Roy) joined them three-wide down the backstretch, and the brouhaha continued through the half in :54.3. Backup Plan clear to the front on the final turn, and Jamieson pulled Fifth And Five off the pylons to advance as Shadow Of An Angel re-fired to pressure the new leader to three-quarters in 1:22.1. Fifth And Five shifted to the outside at the top of the lane and sprinted past the weary duelers en route to a 1-1/2-length victory in 1:49.2 over Backup Plan. Shadow Of An Angel gamely held third.

Fifth And Five ($4.60) took a new career mark with the victory, his fourth of the year in eight starts. A Gold winner last season, he is two-for-two in the Grassroots at three for trainer Carl Jamieson, who co-owns the Bettors Delight-Filou Fly Fast colt with 1140545 Ontario Ltd. of Guelph, Ont. and Trevor Edwards of Kirkton, Ont. Out Of Ice sliced a second off his career mark as he won the second male division in impressive fashion. Jamieson pushed the gelding out from post four, but he was looped by the two outside starters to the quarter of :26.3 provided by longshot Tito N Cheddar (Tyler Jones), who was soon circled by Grin And Win (McNair) on the backstretch. Out Of Ice vacated the three-hole at the half in :55.1 and quickly overhauled Grin And Win before three-quarters in 1:22.4. Out Of Ice soared clear of his opponents coming down the stretch and rolled home a three-length winner under wraps in 1:49.4. Grin And Win finished second with Readyforprimetime (James MacDonald) third.

Out Of Ice ($13.10) is undefeated in three Grassroots starts this year and is four-for-eight overall on the season. Windsun Charlotte ($6.70) was bottled up into mid-stretch, but she ignited once she found room at the pylons and soared four lengths clear to win the first of three $25,000 sophomore pacing filly Grassroots divisions in 1:50.4 for driver James MacDonald. Garry Merner trains the Betterthancheddar-Windsun Chanel filly for 2156604 Alberta Inc., Robert Frank, Douglas Dunbar, and Larry Delellis.
